Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a treatment to eliminate superficial leg veins (spider veins). A solution is injected into the affected vein, which irritates the lining of the blood vessel wall and causes the vein collapse. Blood is rerouted to healthier vessels and the collapsed vein is reabsorbed into surrounding tissue, eventually fading away.

Sclerotherapy is suitable for:

  • spider veins
  • Blue/green reticular veins (feeder veins)

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect during the treatment?

A thin, fine needle is used to inject a solution into the vein. You may experience mild discomfort, depending on the size of the vein. The treatment typically takes from 20-30 minutes. Treatments are spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

Will there be downtime?

Patients can typically resume normal activities post-treatment. Bruising/ discoloration may last several weeks to even a few months. For this reason, treatments are usually best performed in fall/winter months. Compression hose must be worn for 1-2 weeks following treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments needed varies depending on the amount of veins present. Typically 2-6 sessions are needed initially.

How long will results last?

Over time, the body will produce new blood vessels requiring maintenance treatments on an as needed basis.
